CZ full form and meaning
CZ is short for cubic zirconia, a synthetic crystal made from zirconium dioxide. It was developed as a lab-grown material and became popular in jewellery because, cut well, it looks remarkably like a diamond. In India it is widely sold as "American diamond" or "AD", even though it is not a diamond and has nothing to do with America.

CZ vs crystal: are they the same?
No. "Crystal" in jewellery usually means cut glass with added lead or other elements for sparkle. It is softer than CZ and can scratch more easily. CZ is harder and holds its polish longer. Many demi-fine pieces use both; Miayaa pieces are set with crystals, cubic zirconia and gemstones depending on the design.
How to spot good-quality CZ jewellery
- Setting: stones should sit in claws, bezels or pavé settings, not look glued on.
- Alignment: pavé stones should line up evenly with no gaps.
- Clarity: stones should look clear and bright, without cloudiness.
- Metal finish: the plating around stones should be even and smooth.
How to care for American diamond jewellery
- Wipe with a lightly dampened soft cloth and dry.
- Do not soak pavé pieces or use ultrasonic cleaners.
- Store pieces separately so hard CZ does not scratch other jewellery.

CZ does not become permanently cloudy, but lotion, perfume and skin oils leave a film that dulls sparkle quickly, especially on the back of the stone where light enters. A gentle wipe usually brings the fire back. If a stone looks cloudy even after cleaning, it may be crystal or glass rather than CZ, which scratches more easily.
